How we ranked these
We start from battery watt-hours, because that is the honest proxy for range that the “up to 60 miles” marketing hides. Then we weigh rated motor power against the bike’s weight and intended use — a 350 W cruiser is fine on the flat, a 750 W fat-tire folder earns its heft on hills. Certification (UL 2849/2271) breaks ties, because a safety-listed battery on a budget bike is a genuine and uncommon plus. We do not score these bikes with a number, because we have not ridden them; the ranking is our reasoning from the specs, and you can see exactly how we do it.
Where to save, where to spend
Save on the frame material, the paint and the app — none of it makes you faster. Spend on battery size (it is the one upgrade you cannot bolt on later) and, if your commute has hills, on motor power. Do not spend up for a throttle you will not use or a 28 mph top speed that is barred from your local paths. And budget separately for a real lock and lights — on a bike this stealable and this fast, they are not optional extras.

Two patterns are worth pulling out. The battery column spans more than three times top to bottom, and that spread — not the motor column, which is nearly flat — is what actually separates these bikes in use. And the class column is half empty, because several budget makers decline to state a class at all. That is the single most common gap in this bracket and the reason we wrote the class guide: if the maker will not tell you which class a bike is, you cannot know where you are allowed to ride it.
Which price bracket should you actually buy in?
“Under $1,500” is the ceiling this site is built around, but it is not automatically your ceiling. The value curve in this market is steep up to about $700 and close to flat after roughly $1,200, so the useful question is which rung of the ladder your particular ride needs.
- Under $500 — a real e-bike, but with a small pack and a short honest range. Right if your rides are under about ten miles and mostly flat.
- Under $1,000 — where the market actually lives. A 500 to 750 W motor, 500 to 700 Wh, fat tires if you want them, and increasingly a UL listing. This is the bracket most readers should buy in.
- Under $1,500 (this page) — buys the biggest packs available at this level, suspension, and equipment fitted as standard rather than sold as extras.
- Under $2,000 — one rung up, and the one where the Amazon catalog stops helping. Worth reading before you spend past $1,300, because a lot of what sells in that band is not a legal Class 1/2/3 e-bike at all.
If you are torn between two rungs, spend the difference on watt-hours rather than on features. Battery capacity is the only part of an e-bike you cannot sensibly upgrade later, and the range guide shows how to turn a watt-hour figure into a number of miles you can plan around.
