Start with the fact that makes helmet shopping simpler than it looks: every bike helmet legally sold in the U.S. must pass the same federal impact standard (CPSC 16 CFR 1203). A certified $50 helmet protects your skull in a straight-on impact about as well as a certified $250 one. So the real questions are not “is it safe” but “does it have MIPS, does it fit, and am I paying for anything real above that?”

MIPSis the one feature genuinely worth a small premium: a low-friction liner that lets the helmet rotate slightly on your head to help redirect the twisting force of an angled impact — which is how most real crashes happen. A MIPS helmet in the $50–70 range is the value sweet spot, and it is where we start. Above that, you are mostly paying for weight, ventilation and looks.

Getting the fit right

A helmet only works if it fits. It should sit level, about two finger-widths above your eyebrows, snug enough that it does not rock when you shake your head, with the straps forming a V under each ear and a chin strap you can fit one finger under. A dial-fit system (Giro’s Roc Loc, Retrospec’s ErgoKnob) makes this easy to tune. Replace any helmet after a real impact, even if it looks fine — the foam only protects once.

When to spend more, when not to

Worth it:MIPS, a good fit system, and — for commuters — an integrated light. Not worth it for a value buyer: exotic materials, aero shaping, and huge vent counts that mostly matter to racers. Is MIPS worth it?

For a small premium, yes. MIPS is a low-friction liner that helps redirect the rotational force in an angled crash — the most common real-world crash type — that a standard helmet doesn't specifically address. It's the one upgrade over a basic certified helmet we'd pay for.

Do expensive helmets protect better?

Not in the basic impact test — every helmet sold in the US passes the same CPSC standard. A pricier helmet buys lighter weight, more ventilation, aero shaping and sometimes better fit systems, not fundamentally more straight-on protection. MIPS is the meaningful safety add-on.

When should I replace a bike helmet?

After any crash or hard impact, even if it looks undamaged — the protective foam is designed to crush once. Otherwise, replace it roughly every five years as materials age, or sooner if the straps or shell are damaged.
