A fresh battery is often the difference between retiring a budget e-bike and getting years more out of it — and a bigger pack can turn a short-range bike into a real commuter. But of everything on this site, an e-bike battery is the purchase where cutting corners is genuinely dangerous. Lithium-ion packs are the reason the CPSC runs a whole micromobility safety program, and its guidance is blunt: buy batteries certified to UL 2271, and never charge an uncertified pack unattended.

So treat these picks as a shortlist of the common form factors, not a “buy any of these” list. The right battery for your bike is defined by your bike: the exact voltage, the mounting rail or base plate, and the connector. Get any of those wrong and the pack does not fit or does not work. What has to match your bike

Voltagefirst — a 36 V and a 48 V pack are not interchangeable, and the wrong one can damage the bike. Form factor and mount— many value bikes use a “Hailong” downtube case, but the base-plate and rail dimensions vary, so confirm the pack physically fits your frame. Connector— the discharge connector to the controller must match. And capacity (Ah/Wh)— a bigger number is more range, but only buy up to what your controller and frame support.

The safety rules that are not optional

Buy a pack with a real safety certification (UL 2271). Never charge a battery unattended or overnight. Charge and store it at room temperature, away from anything flammable. Stop using immediately any pack that swells, runs hot, or smells odd. And use a charger matched to the pack — see our charger guide. How do I choose a replacement e-bike battery?

Match four things to your bike: voltage (36V or 48V — not interchangeable), the mounting rail/base plate so it physically fits, the discharge connector, and a capacity your controller supports. Above all, buy a UL 2271-certified pack. When unsure, buy your bike maker's replacement.

Can a bigger battery give my e-bike more range?

Yes — a higher-capacity pack of the same voltage and fit will extend range. But it must match your bike's voltage, mount and connector, and stay within what the controller supports. A range-extender battery is a real upgrade when it fits correctly.

Are aftermarket e-bike batteries safe?

They can be, if certified. This is the highest-risk purchase on an e-bike, so insist on UL 2271 certification, never charge unattended, and never use a pack that swells or runs hot. An uncertified cheap pack is a genuine fire hazard.

How long does an e-bike battery last?

Most lithium-ion e-bike packs last several hundred full charge cycles — commonly 2–5 years of regular use — before capacity noticeably drops. Storing it at moderate charge and temperature, and not always fast-charging, extends its life.
