How Much Does It Cost to Charge an E-Bike?
The math, shown: a full charge costs pennies. Here's exactly how to compute it for your bike, what it works out to per year and per mile, and how it compares to driving.
This is the number no e-bike brand puts on the box, because it is not a selling point so much as a quiet superpower: an e-bike costs almost nothing to run. Not “cheap.” Pennies.Below is exactly how to work it out for any bike, with every assumption stated so you can reproduce it — which is more than the “e-bikes save you money” articles that never show a figure will do.
The formula
Three inputs, one line of arithmetic:
- Battery size in watt-hours (Wh)= volts × amp-hours. A 48 V, 10.4 Ah pack is 48 × 10.4 = ~500 Wh.
- Your electricity rate. The current US average residential rate is 18.83¢ per kWh (April 2026, per the EIA). Yours is on your power bill and may differ.
- Charging efficiency. Chargers are not perfect; about 90% of the energy from the wall ends up in the battery, so we divide by 0.9.
Cost per full charge = (Wh ÷ 1,000 ÷ 0.9) × rate in $/kWh. For a 500 Wh battery at 18.83¢/kWh: (500 ÷ 1,000 ÷ 0.9) × $0.19 = $0.10. About a dime.

Using the current US average rate and 90% efficiency, here is a full charge for the battery sizes you actually see on value e-bikes:

So even the biggest value-bike battery costs about 20.1¢to fill — roughly the price of a single gas-station cracker.
Per year, and per mile
Charging three times a week (156charges a year), a 600 Wh bike costs about $19.58 a yearin electricity. A small 360 Wh commuter is closer to $11.75. That is the entire annual “fuel” bill.
Per mile, e-bike energy use is roughly 20 Wh per mile if you lean on the throttle (less if you pedal), which works out to about 0.4¢ per mile— and, usefully, that figure is about the same whatever your battery size, because bigger batteries just go further per charge. For comparison, a typical car costs 15–20¢ per mile in fuel alone, before insurance, maintenance, depreciation and parking. An e-bike is on the order of 40× cheaper per mile to power than driving.
What this does and doesn’t include
This is the electricitycost — deliberately, because it is the part everyone gets wrong and nobody computes. It does not include the bike, the eventual battery replacement (a real cost every few years), tires, or the occasional tune-up. But even adding those, an e-bike’s total cost of ownership is a rounding error next to a car’s. The charging cost is simply the cleanest, most quotable proof of how cheap these things are to live with.
