Best Cycling Jerseys

A cycling jersey is a t-shirt with three pockets and a zip — and those two details are worth more than the logo. The value jerseys that get the fundamentals right.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we pick

A cycling jersey looks like an expensive t-shirt, and that is exactly the wrong way to think about it. Two details do all the work: rear pockets, which put your phone, keys and a snack where you can reach them while riding and where they will not swing around, and a full-length zip, which is the only temperature control you get on a bike. Everything else — the fabric, the fit, the branding — is refinement on top of those two things.

Which is good news for a value buyer, because pockets and a zip cost almost nothing to include. The jerseys here run a fraction of the price of the names you see in bike shops and get the fundamentals right; what you give up is fabric refinement and long-term durability, not function. If you ride an e-bike in normal clothes today and wonder whether a jersey is worth it: the pockets alone usually settle it within a week.

How we picked

Pockets first. Three rear pockets is the standard, and a fourth zippered one is a genuine upgrade because it is the only place a phone is actually secure. Zip length second— a full-length zip lets you dump heat on a climb and close up on a descent, which a quarter-zip cannot do. Then fabric: moisture-wicking is table stakes, and a stated UPF 50+ rating is a real differentiator for anyone riding open roads in summer, because it does not sweat off the way sunscreen does. We have not worn each of these through a season; here is exactly what we do instead.

Sizing: the thing everyone gets wrong

Cycling jerseys are cut close on purpose — a flapping jersey is noisy and drags — and value brands often use Asian sizing on top of that. The practical rule: size up one from your normal t-shirt size unless the listing chart says otherwise, and read the chart rather than the letter. If you want a relaxed fit for casual e-bike riding, size up two. A jersey you find too tight to wear is worse value than one that cost twice as much.

Do you need a jersey on an e-bike?

Honestly, not always. If your rides are 20 minutes on the throttle in normal clothes, a jersey is optional and a phone mount plus a rack bag covers the same carrying problem. Where a jersey earns its place is on longer rides where you actually pedal— it moves sweat off your skin instead of holding it, it does not chafe under a backpack strap, and the pockets mean you stop less. Pair it with padded shorts and the comfort difference on an hour-plus ride is not subtle.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a cycling jersey different from a t-shirt?

Three rear pockets and a full-length zip. The pockets carry a phone, keys and food where you can reach them while riding; the zip is your only real temperature control on a bike. The riding-specific cut and moisture-wicking fabric matter too, but the pockets and zip are the functional core.

What size cycling jersey should I buy?

Usually one size up from your normal t-shirt size — jerseys are cut close on purpose and value brands often use smaller sizing. Read the listing's measurement chart rather than trusting the letter. If you want a relaxed fit for casual e-bike riding, size up two.

Are expensive cycling jerseys worth it?

For a value buyer, rarely. Premium jerseys buy better fabric, more refined seams and longer life — not more pockets or a better zip. A budget jersey that gets the fundamentals right delivers most of the function for a fraction of the price; it just wears out sooner.

Do I need a cycling jersey for an e-bike?

Not for short throttle-powered trips in normal clothes. It earns its place on longer rides where you actually pedal — moving sweat off your skin, not chafing under a strap, and letting you carry things without a bag. If you ride an hour or more, it's a genuine upgrade.
