An e-bike travels at 20 mph or more, which changes the math on lights. You cover ground fast enough that a driver pulling out needs to register you sooner, and you close on potholes and pedestrians quickly enough that on an unlit path you need to actually see, not just be seen. Many budget e-bikes ship with a token headlight and no rear light at all — so a proper set is one of the first upgrades worth making.

How many lumens do you need?

For a lit city commute, 400–800 lumens with a daytime flash mode is plenty to be seen. For dark, unlit roads or paths where you need to see the surface at speed, step up to 1,000+ lumens. More is not always better: very bright lights on a lit street can dazzle oncoming traffic, and they drain the battery fast on high. Match the light to where you actually ride.

Don’t forget the rear

Getting hit from behind is the crash a rear light guards against, so never run a headlight without a taillight. A flashing red rear light is one of the most effective, cheapest safety upgrades there is. Our value set includes both; if you buy a headlight on its own, add a rear light in the same order. Lights handle the drivers who are looking. The audible half of the same job is a bell or horn, which is a cheap purchase and the one most e-bike owners skip — that page ranks them on handlebar fit and legality rather than on the decibel claims, because not one listing in the category publishes the distance its figure was measured at.
