A mirror is the most underrated safety upgrade on an e-bike, and the reason is speed. On a regular bicycle you have time to shoulder-check; at 20 mph in traffic, the half-second your eyes leave the road ahead is a half-second you are riding blind into whatever is in front of you. A mirror turns “is it clear behind me?” into a glance instead of a maneuver — and it makes you far less likely to wobble into the lane while you look.

Mirrors are also where cheap and good diverge in an obvious way, so this is a short, honest list rather than a padded one. Three picks, each the best answer for a different bar setup and budget. What separates them is lens material (steel and polymer survive tip-overs, glass and acrylic do not equally), field of view, and whether the mount stays where you put it— a mirror that creeps out of adjustment every few miles is worse than no mirror, because you stop trusting it.

How we picked

Lens durability led, because the most common way a bike mirror dies is the bike falling over in a garage. A stainless steel or break-proof polymer lens survives that; glass does not. Mount stability came next: bar-end mounts are inherently more stable than clamp mounts because the mirror sits inside the tube rather than hanging off a bracket, which is a large part of why our top pick is a bar-end design. Then field of view— a bigger face genuinely shows more, at the cost of being more exposed. We have not ridden every one of these for a season; this is exactly what we do instead.

Bar-end or handlebar clamp?

Bar-end mirrors plug into the open end of the handlebar. They are stable, out of the way of your hands and controls, and they put the mirror at the widest point of the bike, which gives a better angle past your own shoulder. The catch: your bars need open ends, and grips or bar plugs have to come off. Handlebar clampmirrors bolt anywhere along the bar and fit any setup, including bikes with sealed grips — they are more versatile but more prone to creeping loose and more exposed in a fall. Check your grip and bar setup before deciding.

Flat or convex — and which side?

Convex lenses squeeze a wider scene into a small mirror, which is why cheap mirrors use them. The trade is honest and worth knowing: convex makes following traffic look farther away and smaller than it is, so never judge a gap purely on a convex mirror. Flat lenses show true distance but less of the lane. Mount on your left in the US, where overtaking traffic comes from, and set the angle sitting on the bike in your normal riding position, not standing beside it. Pair the mirror with real lights— being seen and seeing behind you are two halves of the same problem.

Are mirrors worth it on an e-bike?

More than on a regular bike. At 20 mph, a shoulder check means taking your eyes off the road ahead for longer than is comfortable, and many riders wobble into the lane while doing it. A mirror turns that into a glance. It's one of the cheapest genuine safety upgrades you can fit.

Bar-end or handlebar mirror?

Bar-end if your handlebars have open ends — the mount is more stable, out of the way of your controls, and sits at the bike's widest point for a better view past your shoulder. Handlebar-clamp if your bars have sealed grips or plugs, or if you want to reposition it easily.

Which side should a bike mirror go on?

In the US, the left — that's the side overtaking traffic comes from. Set the angle while sitting on the bike in your normal riding position, not standing next to it, or it will be aimed at the wrong place once you're actually riding.

Are convex bike mirrors accurate?

They show more of the lane but distort distance — following traffic looks farther away and smaller than it really is. That's fine for spotting that a car is there, but don't judge whether a gap is safe from a convex mirror alone. A flat lens shows true distance across a narrower field.
