Retrospec Beaumont Rev Review: The Easiest Bike Here to Get On

A UL-certified step-through city bike at ~57.5 lb — light for the class, easy to mount, and honest about its 350 W ceiling.

What it is

The Retrospec Beaumont Rev is a step-through city e-bike built on the same platform as the company’s Chatham cruiser: a 350 W hub motor, a 360 Whbattery, Class 2 operation with a throttle, and — the part that matters — certification to both UL 2849 (the complete bike system) and UL 2271 (the battery pack). It weighs about 57.5 lb.

Reading that spec sheet next to a 750 W fat-tire bike at a similar price will make the Beaumont look underpowered, and on raw numbers it is. What the numbers do not show is that this bike is aimed at a different question: not “how much bike can I get for $1,000?” but “which bike will I actually ride three times a week?” For a lot of buyers those have different answers.

The frame is the product

A step-through frame drops the top tube so the highest thing you have to lift your leg over is roughly the height of a stair. That sounds trivial until you consider what mounting a conventional e-bike involves: balancing 60 lb of bike on one leg while swinging the other over a bar at hip height, usually while wearing normal clothes, often on a slope, sometimes with a bag on. Every one of those is a small friction, and small frictions are what decide whether a bike gets ridden.

The same geometry helps at the other end of the ride. Getting a foot down quickly at a light, stepping off rather than dismounting, standing over the bike while you unlock it — a low standover makes all of it unremarkable. This is why the Beaumont tops our step-through ranking, and it is genuinely rider-shape driven rather than a marketing category: a low standover suits anyone with shorter legs, stiffer hips, a skirt, a knee that objects, or simply a preference for not performing gymnastics before a trip to the shops.

~57.5 lb is a real advantage

Weight is the spec that quietly decides where an e-bike can live, and at 57.5 lb the Beaumont is roughly 12 lb lighter than the fat-tire bikes in this bracket. Twelve pounds does not sound like much until you are lifting the bike over a curb, wheeling it up a ramp, or hoisting it onto a rack.

It is still not a bike you carry upstairs casually — nothing with a motor and a battery is — but it sits in the band where one reasonably strong person can manage a few steps, where a wider range of car racks are within their weight rating, and where getting it back upright after a tip-over is a lift rather than an event. Both UL certifications, which is rare

Most value e-bikes make no certification claim at all. A few claim UL 2271 on the battery. Carrying bothUL 2849 for the complete electrical system and UL 2271 for the pack puts the Beaumont in a small group at this price, and it is the strongest single argument for the bike.

The distinction is worth understanding. UL 2271 covers the battery pack itself — cells, BMS, enclosure. UL 2849 covers the whole system: pack, charger, controller and motor tested together, which is where a lot of real failures actually originate, because a certified pack paired with a bad charger or controller is not a certified system. The CPSC’s micromobility guidance points at exactly these standards. It does not make the bike fireproof — the charging rules in our battery care guidestill apply — but it means someone tested this system against a published standard.

What 350 watts and 360 watt-hours actually mean

These are the two numbers where the Beaumont gives ground, and both deserve honest treatment rather than either a defense or a dismissal.

350 W ratedis enough to move a 57 lb bike and a rider along flat and gently rolling ground at the Class 2 ceiling of 20 mph without drama. On a genuinely steep, sustained climb, the motor will feel its limit and you will be pedaling in earnest. 360 Whis the smallest full-size pack in the bracket. At our standard 20 Wh-per-mile planning figure that is about 18 milesof throttle-heavy riding; light pedal assist on flat city streets can stretch it to 25–30. Retrospec’s 42-mile claim needs near-ideal conditions. For city trips of a few miles at a time it is entirely sufficient and it fills for about 7.5 cents; for a 15-mile each-way commute it is not, and the SASIKEIBIKE 20″ folder carries nearly three times the energy.

City tires, city bike

The Beaumont runs city tires, not gravel or fat rubber. They roll efficiently on pavement, which is part of why the modest battery goes as far as it does, and they are the wrong choice for a gravel path, a beach or an unplowed winter bike lane. This is a bike for streets and paved paths, and it is better at that job for the choice. If your route includes rough surfaces, the fat-tire picksare the right family — and if you simply want fewer flats on pavement, a puncture-resistant tire is the cheapest meaningful upgrade you can make to this bike.

Who should buy it — and who should skip

Buy the Beaumont Rev if easy mounting is a real requirement rather than a nice-to-have, you ride city streets and paved paths for distances under about 15 miles at a time, you want the lightest full-size option here, and you want a system that is certified end to end. On those terms it is the most sensible bike in the bracket and its modest power is beside the point.

Skip it if you live somewhere steep, if your rides regularly go past 20 miles (the battery is the binding constraint, not the motor), or if you need fat tires for the surfaces you ride. If you want the same certified platform but prefer a classic cruiser silhouette with a top tube, the Chatham Rev is the same bike in a different frame.

It is one of the few value e-bikes carrying both UL 2849 (the bike system) and UL 2271 (the battery), it weighs ~57.5 lb which is light for the category, and the step-through frame is genuinely easy to mount. You are trading power and range for those things — 350W and 360Wh are both at the modest end.

What is the real range of the Beaumont Rev?

Retrospec claims up to 42 miles from a 360Wh battery. At roughly 20 watt-hours per mile — our planning figure for throttle-heavy riding — that is about 18 miles. Ride mostly on low pedal assist on flat city streets and 25-30 miles is achievable. Plan around 18-20 and you will not be stranded.

Can the Beaumont Rev handle hills?

Gentle ones. The 350W rated motor is the smallest in our value bracket alongside its Chatham stablemate and the Jasion EB5, and on a sustained steep climb you will be contributing real effort. City tires and modest gearing do not help. If your area has serious hills, look at the 500-750W picks instead.
