How Much Do E-Bikes Weigh? The Spec That Decides Where It Lives
Published weights from every bike we cover, what each band means for stairs, car racks and transit — and why two manufacturers here decline to print a number at all.
Weight is the e-bike specification that decides the most and gets discussed the least. Motor watts and battery capacity determine how the bike rides. Weight determines whether it can live where you live — and a bike that cannot get to its storage spot is not a bike, it is furniture.
Here are the published weights for every bike we cover, what each band means in practice, and the two cases where a manufacturer would rather not tell you.
What the bikes we cover actually weigh
Every figure below was read from the manufacturer or retailer listing on the date recorded in our product registry. Where a maker does not publish a weight, we say so rather than estimating.
| Bike | Weight | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Jasion EB5 | 49.6 lb | 26-inch commuter, 360 Wh |
| isinwheel U3 | 51.9 lb | 16-inch folder, 281 Wh |
| Hiboy P7 (discontinued) | 55.8 lb | 27.5-inch road commuter, 720 Wh |
| Retrospec Beaumont Rev | 57.5 lb | Step-through city, 360 Wh |
| Retrospec Chatham Rev | 58 lb | Cruiser, 360 Wh |
| GoTrax F3 | 58.3 lb | Road commuter, 672 Wh |
| Sohamo S3 Step-Thru (discontinued) | 69 lb | Folding fat tire, up to 960 Wh |
| GoTrax Ranger | 69.7 lb | Fat tire, 499 Wh |
| Heybike Ranger S | 72 lb | Folding fat tire, 692 Wh |
| Heybike Mars 2.0 | 75 lb | Folding fat tire, 600 Wh |
| Vivi C26 | Not published | Step-through cruiser, 374 Wh |
| Aipas A2 | Not published | Folding fat tire, 614 Wh |
The spread is 49.6 to 75 lb— a 25-pound gap between the lightest and heaviest bike in the same price bracket. That is not a small variation; it is the difference between two entirely different ownership experiences.
What each weight band means in practice
Under 55 lb — you can handle it alone
One reasonably strong adult can lift this up a flight of stairs, into a car boot, or onto a bus rack. It is still a heavy object — comparable to a large suitcase — but it does not require a plan. A wider range of car racks are within their rating. Getting it upright after a tip-over is a lift rather than an event.
This band is where the Jasion EB5 (49.6 lb) and isinwheel U3(51.9 lb) sit, and it is the only band that genuinely works for a walk-up apartment. Both achieve it the same way: a small battery, no fat tires, no suspension.
55–60 lb — manageable, with intent
The middle band, and where most well-balanced value bikes land — the Hiboy P7at 55.8 lb was remarkable here, because it carried a 720 Wh battery at this weight; it has since been discontinued, and it is listed as the benchmark rather than as a buy. You can lift these onto a rack or up a few steps, and you will feel it. Getting them up two full flights alone is unpleasant but possible. Most car racks with a decent rating will take them.
Removing the battery before a lift is genuinely worth doing here — a removable pack takes several pounds off, and it is also the safer way to carry the bike because the mass is more balanced.
65–75 lb — plan around it
The fat-tire and big-battery bikes. These are two-person objects for stairs, need an e-bike-rated hitch rack for a car, and are unrealistic for transit. Getting one upright after it falls in a garage is a proper effort, which is also why we recommend a break-proof mirror lensfor anything in this band — garage tip-overs are the most common way a bike mirror dies.
This is fine, if your storage is at ground level. The GoTrax Ranger, Heybike Ranger S and SASIKEIBIKE 20″ folderare all bikes whose weight is simply the cost of what they do — and SASIKEIBIKE, like several brands in this bracket, does not publish a figure at all. It is only a problem if you did not check before buying.
It is also the band where storage stops being an afterthought. Most bike hooks and stands are rated well below 65 lb, so the published weight above is the number to take shopping — our e-bike storage rack picks are sorted by exactly that figure.
Where the weight comes from
A useful way to think about it: an e-bike is a bicycle plus roughly 25–45 pounds of additions, and you can trace almost all of it.
- The battery— the single largest addition on big-battery bikes. Lithium cells plus a case, a BMS and a mounting rail add up fast, and capacity scales with mass fairly directly. It is why the discontinued Sohamo S3 in 960 Wh trim was heavier than the same bike with 720 Wh.
- The motor— a geared rear hub motor typically runs 6–9 lb, plus the wiring, controller and display.
- The frame— built stronger to carry the extra mass and handle motor torque, which means thicker tubing than a bicycle equivalent.
- Tires and wheels— four-inch fat tires and the wider rims they need add several pounds over city tires, and it is rotating weight, which you feel more than static weight when accelerating.
- Everything else— suspension forks, racks, fenders, a bigger saddle. Each is a pound or two and they accumulate.
The direct consequence: you cannot have a light bike and a big battery at the same price. Range and weight trade against each other, and choosing between them is the central decision in this bracket. Our range guide covers the other side of that trade.
Folding is not lightening
This is the most expensive misunderstanding in the category. Three of the four heaviest bikes in the table above are folders.
Folding changes the bike’s shape: it fits in a car trunk without a rack, in a closet, under a stairwell, in an RV. Those are real benefits worth paying for. It does not change the bike’s mass: a folded 72 lb bike is 72 lb in a smaller box, and lifting it into that trunk is the same lift.
Only genuinely compact folders on 16-inch wheels — like the U3 at ~52 lb — deliver both, and they pay for it in ride quality and battery size. If your reason for wanting a folder is carrying it, that is the only branch of the category that will satisfy you. Our folding e-bike picks sort the two cases out explicitly.
Car racks: check the number before you buy either
A great many people buy an e-bike and discover their existing rack cannot legally or safely carry it. Rack ratings are per-bike, and plenty of trunk-mounted and older hitch racks are rated around 35–50 lb — below every bike in the table above.
Three things to check: the per-bike weight limit(not the total), whether the rack’s arms suit a step-through or fat-tire frame, and your vehicle’s hitch tongue weight ratingfor a hitch rack. Racks specifically rated for e-bikes exist, usually as platform hitch racks with a loading ramp, which is worth having when the alternative is lifting 70 lb chest-high. Removing the battery before loading is standard practice and takes several pounds off.
When a manufacturer does not publish a weight
Two bikes in the table say “Not published,” and we leave them that way rather than estimating. A number we did not read from a source is a guess, and a guess in a spec table is indistinguishable from a fact to the person reading it.
It is also information in its own right. Weight is trivially easy for a manufacturer to measure, so an omission is rarely an oversight — it is usually a figure the seller would rather you did not compare. If you need to lift, carry or rack the bike, ask the seller directly before ordering and get the answer in writing. Shipping weight is not the same as bike weight (packaging and accessories are included), so ask for the bike weight specifically.
The short version
- Value e-bikes run 50–75 lb; the spread within one price bracket is 25 lb.
- Under 55 lb is the only band that works for stairs and transit.
- Battery capacity and fat tires are where most of the extra weight goes — range and lightness trade directly.
- Folding is about storage, not carrying. Most folders are among the heaviest bikes here.
- Check your car rack’s per-bike rating before you buy the bike, not after.
- An unpublished weight is a reason to ask, not a reason to assume.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an e-bike weigh?
Value e-bikes under $1,500 typically weigh 50-75 lb. Lighter city and commuter bikes with smaller batteries land around 50-58 lb; fat-tire and big-battery models run 69-75 lb. For comparison, a comparable non-electric hybrid bicycle is usually 25-30 lb.
Why are e-bikes so heavy?
Three things the bicycle does not have: the battery (a 700Wh pack is several pounds of cells plus its case), the motor (a geared hub motor is typically 6-9 lb), and a frame built stronger to handle the extra mass and the torque. Fat tires, wider rims and a rack add more.
Can one person lift an e-bike?
Below about 55 lb, one reasonably strong person can manage a short carry or a flight of stairs. Above that it becomes a planned operation, and above about 70 lb stairs are realistically a two-person job. Removing the battery first takes several pounds off and is worth doing before any lift.
Are folding e-bikes lighter?
Usually not. Folding changes a bike's shape, not its weight — most folding fat-tire e-bikes weigh 69-75 lb, the same as non-folding ones. Only genuinely compact folders on 16-inch wheels get down to around 52 lb. Buy a folder for storage, not because you expect to carry it.
Will my car bike rack hold an e-bike?
Check the rack's per-bike weight limit before assuming. Many trunk-mounted and older hitch racks are rated around 35-50 lb per bike, which is below almost every e-bike here. E-bike-rated hitch racks with a ramp exist for exactly this reason and are the realistic answer for a 70 lb bike.
