What each price bracket buys

The interesting boundary is around $700. Below it, the compromises compound: a 360 Wh battery is a genuinely short-range bike, and the components that get cheapened are the brakes and the wheels, which are the two you least want cheapened on something that weighs 55 lb. Above it, you are choosing between trade-offs rather than accepting deficiencies.
The other interesting boundary is around $1,500, where the Amazon-carried market largely ends and the direct-to-consumer brands begin. The first-year total nobody quotes
Buy the bike and you are not finished. These are the costs that arrive in the first twelve months, and only the last one is optional:
- A lock that matches the bike’s value.An e-bike is a more attractive target than the bicycle beside it. Budget meaningfully here — see our lock roundup.
- Lights. Legally required after dark in most places, and most value e-bikes either omit them or fit tokens. Our light picks cover what actually works at e-bike speeds.
- A helmet. Required by law for some riders and classes; sensible for everyone. See the helmet roundup.
- A floor pump and basic tools. Small money, and the difference between maintaining the bike and paying someone to.
- Consumables. E-bikes eat chains, brake pads and tires faster than bicycles because of the weight and the torque. Expect at least one set of pads and possibly a chain in year one if you commute.
- Optional but common: fenders, a rack, a phone mount, a bike computer, a cover. Each is modest; together they add up.

Electricity: the cheapest line on the page
Charging is close to a rounding error, and the arithmetic is simple enough to do for your own bike. A full charge uses roughly the battery’s capacity in watt-hours, converted to kilowatt-hours, multiplied by your electricity rate.

The cost that catches people out: the battery
This is the real depreciation on an e-bike. Battery packs lose capacity with charge cycles and with age, and a replacement is a significant fraction of what a budget e-bike cost new — on the cheapest bikes, sometimes an uncomfortable fraction.
Two things follow. First, treat the pack as a consumable with a multi-year life rather than a permanent part; our battery lifespan guidecovers what to expect and what a replacement costs. Second, before you buy, check that a replacement pack for that specific model is actually available — a bike whose battery cannot be replaced is a bike with a fixed lifespan, and that is a hidden part of its price.
What it is worth in three years
Resale is the part of the cost picture almost nobody calculates, and on a value e-bike it is dominated by one component. A three-year-old budget e-bike with a healthy battery is a usable bike worth real money to somebody; the same bike with a tired pack is worth what a buyer thinks a replacement will cost them, subtracted from what the bike would otherwise fetch.
That has a practical consequence for how you buy. A bike using a common, replaceable battery format holds value better than an equivalent bike with a proprietary pack, because the buyer can see a route forward. It also has a consequence for how you own: the charging and storage habits that keep a pack healthy are not just about your own range, they are about what the bike is worth when you are finished with it.
The other resale factor is condition, and on an e-bike that mostly means whether the bike lived outside. Corroded connectors, a sun-faded display and a rusted chain are visible in thirty seconds and priced accordingly — which is why a $15 cover is one of the better returns on this entire page.
What an e-bike saves
Against a car, the numbers are genuinely large for short trips: no fuel, no parking, no congestion, and the running cost measured in cents rather than dollars. Our e-bike vs car comparison works through it for typical journeys.
Against public transport, it depends entirely on your fare. Against doing nothing, it costs money and buys mobility and exercise.
