How we picked
We started from frame geometry and wheel size, because they decide who a bike physically suits, then applied the site’s usual filters: battery capacity, rated power, weight and whether the listing publishes the numbers at all. Each pick here is the answer to a different body and a different priority rather than four versions of the same bike. We have not ridden every one of these; this is exactly what we do instead.
The four measurements that decide fit
Standover heightis the distance from the ground to the top tube where you straddle it. You want an inch or two of clearance in flat shoes — on a heavy e-bike, being able to put both feet down flat while straddling the frame is a safety feature, not a comfort one. If a listing does not publish standover, a step-through frame removes the question entirely.
Saddle height rangematters more than frame size on most value bikes, which come in one size. Your leg should be nearly straight with the heel on the pedal at the bottom of the stroke. Check the seatpost’s minimum insertion mark: a tall rider who has to pull the post past that mark needs a longer post, not a different saddle position.
Reach is how stretched out you are. Value e-bikes are generally upright, which suits most riders, but a very tall rider on a 20-inch folding frame will feel cramped no matter how high the saddle goes. That is the single biggest reason to prefer full-size wheels if you are over about six feet.
Payload capacity is the number to actually look up before buying. It covers rider plus cargo, and on budget bikes it is often lower than people assume. Where a listing publishes it, believe it and leave margin; where it does not, ask the seller before you buy rather than after. Wheel size and rider height
Wheel diameter changes both fit and ride quality, and the value bracket spans a wide range of it.
- 16 to 20 inch— folders and compact bikes. Great for storage, harsher over potholes, and cramped for tall riders. Fine for most adults under about 5′10″, especially with a long seatpost.
- 26 inch, often with 4-inch fat tires— the default in this bracket. Stable, forgiving over bad pavement, and it suits a wide range of heights because the frames are usually roomy.
- 26 inch on narrow tires— the Jasion Roamer runs 26″ wheels on 1.95″ rubber rather than 4″ balloons. Same standover as the fat-tire bikes, but it holds speed far better and asks less of the battery, which is what you want if most of your riding is pavement.
Step-over or step-through?
The traditional diamond frame with a high top tube is stiffer and, all else equal, a little stronger. A step-through frame — the Retrospec Beaumont here — trades a small amount of that for something many adults value more: you can get on and off without swinging a leg over a 60-pound bike, and you can put your feet down instantly at a light.
That is not a niche preference. It matters for anyone with restricted hip mobility, anyone carrying a rear rack load, anyone riding in work clothes, and anyone who has ever caught a heel on a saddle bag while dismounting. Weight is a fit spec too
The bikes here run from 55.8 lb to 69.7 lb, and that number decides more of your ownership experience than any other. It sets whether you can get the bike up a step into a hallway, onto a car rack, or upright after a tip-over in a parking lot. A bike you cannot handle off the saddle is a bike you will ride less, regardless of how well it fits when you are on it.
