What an IP rating actually promises
Most e-bikes quote something like IPX4 or IP65 for the frame electronics. The two digits mean different things: the first is protection against solids (dust), the second against water. An X means that property was not tested.
- IPX4— splashing water from any direction. That is rain and road spray. It is not a pressure washer and it is not a puddle you ride through up to the hub.
- IPX5 / IP65— low-pressure jets. More margin, still not immersion.
- IPX7— temporary immersion. Rare on complete e-bikes; more common on individual accessories like lights and computers.
The practical translation: ride in rain freely, avoid standing water deep enough to reach the hub motor or battery contacts, and never point a pressure washer at a bike. High-pressure water drives past seals that shed rain perfectly well, and it is the single most common way people damage an e-bike while trying to look after it.
The parts that actually mind water
Connectors. The plugs between controller, display, motor and battery are the weak point on budget builds. They shed spray but do not love sitting submerged or wet for days. A bike left uncovered outdoors in a wet week is at more risk than a bike ridden through a storm and brought inside.
The battery contacts. Water sitting on the terminals where the pack meets the frame cradle causes corrosion, and corrosion causes intermittent faults that look like electrical gremlins. Wipe the contacts dry if the bike has been out in heavy rain.
The chain and cassette. Not damaged by water so much as by what water carries. Wet grit is a grinding paste, and an e-bike puts more force through its chain than legs do. This is the strongest practical argument for fenders: they keep the road off the drivetrain, which is worth more than keeping it off your shirt.
The display. Usually sealed, but a display left face-up under weeks of rain and sun ages fast. A cover solves this for bikes stored outdoors.
Riding technique in the wet
The bike is fine. The physics is what changes, and on a 70 lb machine it changes more than it does on a bicycle.
Braking distances lengthen substantially. Disc brakes recover faster than rim brakes, but there is still a moment of nothing while the pads wipe water off the rotor. Brake earlier, more gently, and give the rotors a light drag before a junction to clear them. Our brakes guide covers why a heavy e-bike asks more of its brakes in the first place.
Grip is worst in the first minutes of rain, when water lifts oil off the road surface. Painted lines, metal covers, tram rails and wet leaves are all considerably slipperier than the asphalt around them — cross them upright rather than while leaning.
Throttle needs restraint.A Class 2 throttle can deliver full power to the rear wheel from a standstill, and on a wet painted junction box that is how the back end steps out. Feed it in.
You are harder to see. Rain and low light arrive together. Use lights in daytime rain, and add reflective gear if your wet rides are also your dark ones.
Puddles are the real risk, not rain
The distinction that matters: rain falls on a bike, and a bike is built for that. Standing water gets pushed intoit, and a hub motor rolling through a flooded gutter at 15 mph is forcing water past seals rather than letting them shed it.
The parts at risk are the ones lowest on the bike, which is also where the expensive ones live: the hub motor itself, the axle connector where the motor cable leaves the wheel, and on some frames the underside of the battery cradle. Motors that develop intermittent faults after a wet winter have usually been ridden through standing water repeatedly rather than caught in one storm.
So the rule is simple and it costs nothing: ride around puddles rather than through them, and where a flooded section cannot be avoided, go slowly — speed is what drives water past a seal. Deep enough to reach the hub is deep enough to turn back for. That is also good advice for reasons unrelated to electronics: a puddle hides potholes, and on a heavy bike a hidden edge is a bent rim.
After a wet ride
Three minutes, and it is the difference between a bike that ages well and one that develops mystery faults:
- Wipe the bike down, especially around the battery cradle and the display. A cloth, not a hose.
- Let the battery reach room temperature before charging.A cold, wet pack goes on the charger after it has dried and warmed up — not straight from a winter ride.
- Re-lubricate the chain once it is dry. Rain washes lubricant off, and a dry chain under motor torque wears quickly.
- Do not store the bike wet under a cover. Trapped moisture is worse than open air. Let it dry, then cover it.

The one rule with no exceptions
Never charge a battery that is wet, damaged, swollen or unusually warm, and never charge one unattended overnight. The CPSC’s micromobility guidance exists because lithium battery fires are a real and documented hazard rather than a theoretical one, and the two moments of highest risk are charging and physical damage.
If a pack has been immersed — a deep puddle, a bike blown over into a flooded gutter — do not charge it, keep it away from anything flammable, and replace it. That is an expensive sentence to write on a value site, and it is still the right advice.
