Where the reflective material sitsmattered most — a band on a moving ankle is worth more than a larger patch on a static back, for reasons we explain below. Then comfort, because the vest you find too hot is the vest you leave at home, and a mesh vest over a jersey is a different proposition from a solid plastic one. Then active versus passive, and price. We have not ridden every one of these; this is exactly what we do instead.
Biological motion: why ankles beat backs
This is the one genuinely useful idea in this category, and it is why the cheapest product here earns a place next to the vests.
A reflective patch on your back tells a driver that something is there. Reflective material on your ankles and knees does something different: as you pedal, it traces the up-and-down arc of human movement, and the human visual system is extremely good at recognizing that pattern as a person. It gets identified as a cyclist faster and from further away than a static shape does.
The practical consequence is that a $6 set of ankle bands can contribute more to being seen than a much larger reflective panel higher up. Wear both if you can. If you only buy one thing, put it on your moving parts.
Passive reflective and its one failure mode
Retro-reflective material bounces light back toward its source, which is why it lights up spectacularly in headlights and does nothing at all without them. In practice that means it works brilliantly on a lit road with cars around, and it is close to useless in two situations that matter: at dusk, when there is enough ambient light that drivers have not switched their headlights on, and on unlit lanes where the only illumination is your own.
That is the argument for an LED vest. Active light is visible regardless of what anyone else is doing, and dusk is statistically one of the worst times to be on a road. It is also why neither replaces a real headlight and tail light— those are legally required in most places after dark, and a vest is not a substitute for them.
Fluorescent by day, reflective by night
These are two different technologies and they solve different problems. Fluorescentcolors — the yellows, oranges and greens that look almost artificially bright — convert ultraviolet into visible light, which makes them stand out in daylight and especially in the flat gray light of rain and overcast mornings. They do nothing after dark. Retro-reflective strips do nothing in daylight and everything at night.
A garment with both covers the whole day, which is what most commuter vests aim at. If your riding is entirely in daylight, buy for fluorescence; if it is entirely after dark, buy for reflective area and consider LEDs.
Where reflective gear stops helping
Two honest limits. First, being seen is not the same as being safe — drivers who see a cyclist still turn across them, and the fundamentals of position, speed and predictability matter more than any garment. Riding where you can be seen and signaling early does more work than a vest.
Second, an e-bike arrives faster than a driver expects a bicycle to. A car pulling out judges the gap for a 12 mph bicycle; at 20 mph you cover that gap in considerably less time.
