How Fast Do E-Bikes Go?
20 mph, 28 mph, and the number on the listing that is neither. What assisted speed actually means, why your bike's display disagrees, and how fast is fast enough.
The honest answer has two halves. In the United States, an e-bike’s assistedspeed is capped by its class: 20 mph for Class 1 and Class 2, 28 mph for Class 3. Above that cap the motor stops contributing. It does not brake you, it simply stops pushing, and you are riding a heavy bicycle.
The second half is that a bike’s actualspeed is set by physics and traffic rather than by the number on the listing. Most riders on most journeys average far below their bike’s cap, which is why the difference between a 20 mph and a 28 mph bike matters much less on a city commute than the specs suggest.
What the class numbers mean
The three-class system is about how the assist behaves, not about how powerful the motor is:
- Class 1— pedal assist only, cutting out at 20 mph. No throttle. The class most widely allowed on multi-use paths.
- Class 2 — throttle andpedal assist, both cutting out at 20 mph. This is what most value e-bikes are, and the throttle is why.
- Class 3— pedal assist to 28 mph. Typically no throttle above 20 mph, often restricted from paths, and in several states subject to minimum-age and helmet rules.
Several bikes in the value bracket are switchable between classes in the display menu — the GoTrax F3 and the Aipas A2 both are. That flexibility is genuinely useful, and it is also a responsibility: the bike is whatever class it is set to when you ride it. Why your display says something else
A great many owners find their e-bike claims a higher speed than a phone or a GPS computer does. The explanation is usually mundane rather than sinister.
The controller does not measure speed directly. It counts wheel or motor revolutions and multiplies by a wheel circumference stored in its settings — a value set at the factory for a nominal tire. Fit a different tire, run a fat tire at 12 psi instead of 20, or buy a bike whose factory value was simply optimistic, and the number on the screen drifts away from the ground truth.
This matters more than a bit of vanity. If your bike is set up as Class 2 but is really assisting past 20 mph, you are riding something the law treats differently from what the sticker claims. A cheap GPS bike computer settles it in one ride.
What actually limits your speed
Four things, in roughly this order of importance:
Air resistance.Drag rises with the square of speed, so each extra mile per hour costs disproportionately more power than the last. This is why 28 mph bikes drain batteries so much faster than 20 mph ones — the motor is fighting an opponent that gets stronger the faster you go.

Gearing.At 28 mph you need a gear tall enough to pedal usefully. Value bikes with basic 7-speed freewheels often leave you spinning out near the top of the range, which means you stop contributing exactly when the motor needs help most.
Traffic. The real limit on most journeys. Junctions, lights, pedestrians and turns set your average speed, and no motor changes that.
How fast is fast enough?
For a typical urban commute, 20 mph is plenty. Average speed across a city ride is dominated by stopping and starting, so a Class 2 bike and a Class 3 bike usually arrive within a couple of minutes of one another. What Class 3 buys you is the ability to keep up with slow-moving traffic on roads without bike lanes, which is a comfort and confidence benefit rather than a time one.

Speed you should not buy
Listings advertising 35, 40 or 45 mph exist, and they are generally not selling an e-bike in any legal sense. That is the e-moto category: heavier, faster machines that resemble bikes but sit outside the class system, and that are behind a growing number of local bans on multi-use paths. The same applies to derestricting a bike you already own. It is often technically simple, and it changes the machine’s legal status, potentially your insurance position, and the loads on brakes and tires that were specified for a lower speed. A 70 lb bike at 35 mph is asking questions of mechanical disc brakes that they were never designed to answer.
Assist levels and what they actually change
A common misunderstanding: assist level does not set your speed. On a cadence-sensor bike, the assist level sets how much power the motor contributes when the pedals are turning, and the class cutoff sets where that contribution stops. Level 5 on a flat road does not make you go faster than level 3 once you are already at 20 mph — it just gets you there sooner and drains the battery faster doing it.
Where the level genuinely changes your speed is on hills and into headwinds, when the bike is nowhere near the cutoff and the limiting factor is available power rather than the limiter. That is also why riding at a lower assist level costs you much less time than people expect on an urban route, and saves a great deal of range. Speed you make yourself
The cutoff applies to the motor, not to the bike. Downhill, you will exceed 20 mph on a Class 2 bike easily, because gravity is not regulated — and a 70 lb machine accelerates downhill considerably faster than a bicycle does. Nothing about that is illegal, and everything about it is worth respecting.

Speed costs range, disproportionately
Because drag rises with the square of speed, the last few miles per hour are expensive. A rider cruising at 28 mph is spending dramatically more watt-hours per mile than the same rider at 18 mph on the same bike, and the battery does not care that the display says the bike is capable of it.
This is the practical reason most value e-bikes are Class 2 rather than Class 3: at 20 mph, a 500 Wh battery covers a useful distance, and at 28 mph it does not. If your bike is switchable, set it honestly
Several value e-bikes let you change class from the display menu, which is genuinely useful — a bike that runs Class 2 on the path and Class 3 on the road is one bike doing two jobs. The responsibility that comes with it is that you are the one deciding what the machine is at any moment.
A sensible default: leave it at the lowest class that covers your normal riding, and raise it deliberately for the routes that justify it. Path and trail rules are written by class, and “my bike can be Class 1” is not the same statement as “my bike is Class 1.” Where the label on the frame and the setting in the menu disagree, the setting is what you are actually riding.

Can you make an e-bike go faster?
