Start with the sidewall
Every tire has a pressure range molded into its sidewall, usually as a minimum and maximum in psi and bar. That range is the tire manufacturer’s stated operating window, and it is the only pressure information about your specific tire that is authoritative. Numbers from a forum, from a different bike, or from a general article — including this one — are a starting point inside that window, never a replacement for it.
Two rules that follow: never exceed the maximum, and treat the minimum as a real floor rather than a suggestion, because below it the tire can roll on the rim under cornering load.
Why the right number varies so much

The physics behind the spread is simple. Pressure supports load across the air volume inside the tire. A fat tire has an enormous volume, so it needs very little pressure to carry the same weight; a narrow tire has almost none, so it needs a lot. That is why a fat tire at 40 psi rides like a wooden wheel and a city tire at 15 psi is a pinch flat waiting to happen.
What too low costs you
- Range.Rolling resistance rises sharply as pressure falls, because more tire is deforming with every rotation. On a heavy e-bike, this is one of the largest range variables you control — see our range guide for how it feeds into watt-hours per mile.
- Pinch flats.Hit a curb or a pothole edge on a soft tire and the tube gets crushed between rim and obstacle. On a bike carrying an extra 30 lb of motor and battery, this happens more easily than it did on your bicycle.
- Vague steering.A soft tire squirms in corners and feels unsettled at speed, which on a 70 lb bike is unpleasant rather than merely inefficient.
What too high costs you
- Grip.An over-inflated tire has a smaller contact patch and skips over surface texture instead of conforming to it — worst exactly where you need grip most, on wet or loose surfaces.
- Comfort, and therefore control. Value e-bikes mostly have no suspension; the tire is the suspension. Over-inflate it and every crack comes through the bars.
- Speed, counter-intuitively. Past a point, a harder tire is slower on real pavement, because energy goes into bouncing the bike and rider rather than into forward motion.
Finding your number
Start in the middle of the sidewall range and adjust from experience:
Heavier rider, or carrying cargo— go up. Panniers, a rack load or a passenger all mean more load on the same air volume. If you have added a rack and panniers, revisit the pressure you settled on before you fitted them.
Rough pavement, gravel, wet leaves— go down a few psi for grip and comfort, and accept the range cost.
Smooth pavement, range matters— go up toward the firmer end. On a fat tire this is where a surprising amount of free range is hiding.
Sand or snow— go low, within the sidewall range. This is what fat tires are for, and it is the one case where floating on top matters more than efficiency.
Pressure is the first line against flats, not the only one
Correct pressure prevents pinch flats — the ones caused by the tube being crushed between rim and obstacle. It does nothing about the other kind, where glass, a thorn or a staple goes through the tread, and on an e-bike those are more annoying because the wheel is heavier to remove and the motor cable makes a rear wheel removal a slower job than you are used to.
The order worth working through, cheapest first:
- Get the pressure right. Free, and it removes an entire category of flat.
- Check the tread regularlyfor embedded glass and grit. Picking a shard out before it works through is a minute’s work.

Tire liners and sealant both exist and both have real trade-offs at e-bike weights: liners add rotating weight and can chafe a tube if fitted carelessly, and sealant needs topping up and is messy at a roadside repair. Neither is a substitute for pressure discipline, which is why it sits first on the list.
Check weekly, and use a gauge you trust
All tubes lose air. At fat-tire pressures a small loss is a large percentage — going from 18 to 12 psi is a third of your pressure gone, and the tire still looks fine. Weekly is the right interval for a bike ridden regularly, and it takes two minutes with a floor pump kept where you park the bike.
Two practical notes. Low-pressure fat tires need a gauge that is accurate at the bottom of its scale; a dial calibrated for 160 psi cannot show you the difference between 12 and 15 usefully. And gas station air hoses are the fastest way to burst a fat tire — they deliver more air in a second than the tire wants in total.
